AMC Clinical exam preparation courses, WBA vs the Clinical exam, and OSCE practice with an AI tutor

AMC Clinical exam preparation courses, WBA vs the Clinical exam, and OSCE practice with an AI tutor

TL;DR

  • AMC clinical courses and bridging courses teach the Australian consultation style and run practice stations with feedback; the AMC lists providers but endorses none, and prices run AUD 1,000–6,000+.

  • The Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) replaces the AMC Clinical exam for IMGs working under limited registration at an AMC-accredited hospital: assessed over months in the job for AUD 1,070, instead of 16 stations in Melbourne for AUD 3,000.

  • Choose WBA if you have an accredited job and time; choose the Clinical exam if you’re overseas or want the certificate faster.

  • An OSCE tutor’s job is timed practice out loud with feedback on task, structure and communication; AI OSCE practice does the repetitions a human tutor can’t.

  • AMC Academic, the trusted AMC exam preparation platform for IMGs aspiring to work as doctors in Australia, is bringing an AMC clinical bot for exactly that. Join the newsletter to be told first.

Preparing for the AMC Clinical exam comes down to three questions: whether you need the exam at all or can do a Workplace Based Assessment instead, whether a clinical course is worth the money, and how to get enough timed station practice with feedback to pass 9 of 14. This guide answers all three, because they’re asked together and the answers depend on each other. The Clinical pass rate has sat around one in five; the candidates on the right side of it rehearsed stations aloud, dozens of times, with someone scoring them.

WBA vs the Clinical exam: which one?

Both lead to the AMC certificate. They suit different people.

AMC Clinical examWorkplace Based Assessment
WhereNational Test Centre, Melbourne (limited online)Your hospital, if AMC-accredited
Who can do itAnyone with an MCQ pass and a placementIMGs employed under limited registration at an accredited site
Format16 ten-minute stations in one dayObserved encounters, case-based discussions, multisource feedback over months
FeeAUD 3,000 in person; 3,400 onlineAUD 1,070 to the AMC, plus the provider’s program fee
Getting a placeBatched releases, oversubscribed; expect monthsLimited to accredited sites; depends on where you work
TimeOne day, after a placement waitTypically six to twelve months alongside the job
Best forCandidates overseas, or in Australia without an accredited employer, or wanting the certificate quicklyCandidates already working in an accredited hospital who’d rather be assessed doing the job
Pass patternOne in five per sittingAssessed continuously; progression depends on performance in the job

The honest rule of thumb: if you hold a limited-registration job at an accredited site, WBA is usually the lower-stress route and you earn while you do it. If you’re overseas, the Clinical exam is the only option, and a placement release is the bottleneck. Getting that job in the first place is covered in Jobs after AMC Part 1, and the exam itself in the AMC Clinical exam guide.

What AMC clinical courses actually offer

“AMC clinical courses”, “bridging courses” and “AMC clinical exam preparation courses” describe the same category: a program, usually in Australia, that teaches the Australian consultation style and runs practice stations. The AMC publishes a list of bridging course providers as an information service and is explicit that it doesn’t endorse or accredit any of them.

What a good one gives you:

Practice stations, timed, with an examiner-style score. This is the product. Everything else is packaging.

Feedback on communication, which is scored in nearly every station: open questions, checking understanding, shared decisions, safety-netting, closure.

The Australian way of doing things: what an intern here would say, examine, order and refer.

A cohort to practise with between sessions.

What it can’t give you: the stations. Recalled Clinical stations circulate like MCQ recalls and have the same problems, plus a marking scheme nobody can reconstruct. See AMC recalls and past papers.

What to check before paying: how many timed stations you’ll actually perform (not watch); whether feedback is per station and written; whether the tutors are Australian-registered doctors; and whether the price includes materials or just the room.

What an OSCE tutor should do

Whether it’s a course tutor, a private OSCE tutor or a study partner, the job is the same: put you in a station, start the clock, score you on the task the candidate instructions set, and tell you precisely what cost you the pass. A tutor who lectures is a lecturer. Eight minutes, aloud, scored, repeated. Private OSCE tutoring runs AUD 60–150 an hour and is worth it for a specific weakness, less so for a general run-through.

Where AI OSCE practice fits

The limiting factor in Clinical preparation is repetitions with feedback. A human tutor gives you a handful a week. An AI station partner gives you as many as you want, at 11 pm, playing the patient, timing the eight minutes, and scoring history, examination, diagnosis and management against a structure. It doesn’t replace an examiner’s judgement of your bedside manner, and it doesn’t replace a real person for the final rehearsals. It replaces the fifty repetitions you’d otherwise never get.

That’s what AMC Academic’s AMC clinical bot is built to do, and it’s coming. In the meantime, the free official material is the right foundation: the Clinical Examination Specifications, the Tips from Examiners sheet, the candidate briefing video, and the Handbook of Clinical Assessment for station structure.

How to prepare, whichever route

  1. Read the task in the two minutes and underline it. History, examination, diagnosis or management. The examiner scores the task set.

  2. Practise the task types separately. A focused history in eight minutes is a different skill from a focused examination or a management explanation.

  3. Master the common presentations: chest pain, abdominal pain, headache, the febrile child, bleeding in pregnancy, low mood and risk, the confused elderly patient.

  4. Learn the Australian consultation style and use it every single time.

  5. Rehearse aloud, timed, scored. Dozens of times.

  6. For WBA, the same skills are assessed at the bedside; the difference is that your supervisor sees them daily, so consistency matters more than a single performance.

What AMC Academic offers for the Clinical stage

Today AMC Academic is the best AMC Part 1 preparation an IMG can buy, and hundreds have passed Part 1 and their English exam with it. For the Clinical, two things are on the way: an AMC clinical bot that runs timed stations with you as the patient and scores you the way an examiner would, and an interview bot for the job interviews that come with limited registration. Both are built by IMGs who sat this exam and wanted the practice partner they never had. Join the newsletter on this page and we’ll tell you the day the clinical bot goes live. If you’re still on Part 1, the 2,800-question bank, month-specific mocks, Astra, flashcards, case studies and IELTS are all live now: USD 39 a month, 29 a month for three months, 19 a month for six; five-day free trial; money-back guarantee; 20 free questions with no account.

Frequently asked questions

Is WBA easier than the AMC Clinical exam?

Different. WBA assesses you doing the job over months; the Clinical assesses 16 stations in a day. For a doctor already working at an accredited site, WBA is usually the lower-stress route.

Who is eligible for the AMC Workplace Based Assessment?

IMGs with an MCQ pass working under limited registration at an AMC-accredited WBA site. The list of accredited providers is on the AMC website.

Are AMC clinical courses worth it?

For the timed practice stations with feedback, often yes. For the lectures, rarely. The AMC lists providers but endorses none.

What does an OSCE tutor do?

Runs you through timed stations aloud, scores you on the task set, and tells you what cost you the pass.

Can AI help with OSCE practice?

For repetitions, yes: an AI partner plays the patient, times the station and scores structure. It complements, not replaces, a human examiner’s judgement for final rehearsals.

Does AMC Academic have a Clinical course?

An AMC clinical bot and an interview bot are coming. Join the newsletter to be told first.
