How to become a doctor in Australia as an international medical graduate: the benefits of the AMC exam, and whether it’s worth it

How to become a doctor in Australia as an international medical graduate: the benefits of the AMC exam, and whether it’s worth it

TL;DR

  • For most international medical graduates, the way to become a doctor in Australia runs through the AMC exam: pass it, earn the AMC certificate, register with the Medical Board of Australia, and the hospital jobs, GP pathway and residency routes follow.

  • Resident Medical Officer positions in Australian public hospitals were advertised in 2026 at base salaries from around AUD 95,000 to 128,000 in NSW and from AUD 121,000 in WA, before overtime, penalties and superannuation.

  • Passing Part 1 alone often opens the door to supervised hospital work under limited registration, so the payoff can start before the Clinical.

  • The costs: about AUD 6,500 in exam fees, 12 to 24 months, and a 47% first-time pass rate that rewards proper preparation.

  • AMC Academic, the best AMC Part 1 platform available and the trusted AMC exam preparation platform for IMGs aspiring to work as doctors in Australia, makes the first hurdle the easy one. Built by IMGs who passed. 20 free questions, no account.

The AMC exam is worth taking if you want to practise medicine in Australia and you don’t qualify for a pathway that skips it, because passing it is the only route to registration for most international medical graduates, and registration is what opens the job, the training and the life that follow. That’s the short answer. The longer one, from a team of IMGs who sat it and now work here, weighs what passing actually gives you against what it costs in money, time and effort.

The fastest way to become a doctor in Australia as an IMG

There’s no shortcut, but there is a fastest realistic route. Confirm you’re on the Standard pathway (UK, Irish, US, Canadian and NZ doctors may skip the exam via Competent Authority). Verify your degree with ECFMG while you study. Pass AMC Part 1 first time with three to six months of blueprint-scoped preparation. Sit your English test in the three-week results window. Apply for limited registration and a supervised hospital job the moment you hold a Part 1 pass, because many IMG doctors work in Australia before the Clinical. Then take the Clinical or a Workplace Based Assessment from inside the system. Done cleanly, that’s twelve to eighteen months from first login to first shift, and every month saved is a month of Australian salary earned. The GP pathway in Australia for IMGs runs through the same door: general registration, then RACGP or ACRRM training.

What passing the AMC exam gives you

Registration with the Medical Board of Australia

The AMC Certificate, earned by passing the CAT MCQ and the Clinical (or a Workplace Based Assessment), is what the Medical Board requires for provisional registration on the Standard pathway. Without it, an IMG from outside the Competent Authority countries cannot be registered. That’s the whole reason the exam exists. Who has to sit it is explained in The IMG pathways to practising medicine in Australia.

A job, and earlier than you’d think

Many IMGs start working in Australian hospitals under limited registration after passing Part 1 and before passing the Clinical, in supervised positions. That’s a salary, Australian clinical experience, and access to the Workplace Based Assessment route that replaces the Clinical exam. The pathway from Part 1 to a job is in After AMC Part 1: IELTS, Registration and Your Job Search.

What those jobs pay

Public hospital pay is set by state awards and published in job advertisements. In 2026, Resident Medical Officer positions in NSW local health districts were advertised at base salaries of roughly AUD 94,500 to 127,800 depending on year level, and WA Health’s 2027 recruitment pool listed RMO Year 1 to 3 from AUD 121,360. Those are base figures before overtime, penalty rates, on-call, superannuation (12%) and salary packaging, which together commonly add a quarter to a half on top. Australian Taxation Office data has shown RMOs’ average taxable income well above their base rates for exactly that reason.

Rates vary by state and are revised annually, so treat these as the order of magnitude, not a quote.

A path into specialty training

General registration, which follows 12 months of supervised practice, is the entry requirement for Australian specialty training programs, including general practice through the RACGP and ACRRM. The AMC exam is the first door on that corridor.

A portable, respected qualification

The AMC Certificate signals that you’ve been assessed to the standard of an Australian medical graduate. It’s recognised in Australia and carries weight with employers in New Zealand and elsewhere, and the Australian registration it leads to is itself a strong credential internationally.

Residency and settlement

Medical practitioners have featured on Australia’s skilled migration lists for years, and employer-sponsored and state-nominated visas are common routes for registered doctors. Registration comes first; the Medical Board advises applying for a visa only after Ahpra registration is granted.

The intangibles

Working in a system with strong supervision and training culture, a public health system that functions, a work-life balance that many IMGs describe as the biggest change, and a country that a lot of people want to raise a family in. None of that is in a fee table, and all of it comes up when we talk to doctors who’ve made the move.

What it costs

The other side of the ledger.

CostWhat it looks like
MoneyAbout AUD 6,500 in AMC and verification fees for first-time passes; AUD 10,000 to 15,000 all-in with English testing, preparation and a trip to Melbourne. Each MCQ resit adds AUD 2,920. Full breakdown in AMC exam fees in 2026.
TimeTwelve to twenty-four months from first application to first day of work. Three to six months of study for Part 1 alone.
DifficultyAbout 47% pass the MCQ per sitting and about 21% pass the Clinical. Both numbers reflect preparation more than talent. See AMC exam pass rates.
The Clinical bottleneckPlaces are released in batches and demand exceeds supply; expect to wait.
The job marketRegistration gets you eligibility, not a job. Rural and regional positions are more available than metropolitan ones.

When it’s not worth it

If you qualify for the Competent Authority pathway, don’t sit the AMC exam; you don’t need it. If you’re a specialist with a qualification on the Expedited Specialist list, same. And if you’re choosing between countries with no strong pull toward Australia, compare the whole pathways, not the exams; that comparison is in AMC exam vs PLAB vs USMLE.

Making the first hurdle the easy one

The exam’s reputation for difficulty is mostly a reputation for unprepared candidates. Study to the blueprint, learn Australian management, finish one question bank that explains every option, sit timed forward-only mocks, and the MCQ is a fair exam. The beginner’s version of that plan is in How to prepare for the AMC exam.
