The best AMC question bank in 2026: AMC MCQ question banks, practice questions, trial exams, courses and apps reviewed

TL;DR

  • There are five kinds of AMC exam prep: an AMC MCQ question bank, online courses, coaching classes, private tutors, and apps. For the AMC CAT MCQ, a blueprint-scoped AMC question bank with explanations on every option and timed trial exams does most of the work. A general medical question bank built for medical students or other exams does not.

  • Self-study with the right bank and Australian guidelines is enough for most doctors in clinical practice. Coaching adds structure, not secret content.

  • Judge any prep course on seven things: blueprint scope, explanations on every option, forward-only timed mocks, month-specific mocks, analytics by patient group, Australian references, and a free trial.

  • Costs range from free (the AMC’s own app) to several thousand dollars (classroom coaching). A resit costs AUD 2,920.

  • The best AMC exam prep course in 2026 is AMC Academic: the trusted AMC exam preparation platform for IMGs aspiring to work as doctors in Australia, built by IMGs who passed, with bank, month-specific mocks, Astra, flashcards, cases and IELTS from USD 19 a month. 20 free questions, no account.

The best AMC exam prep course is the one that’s scoped to the AMC blueprint, explains every option, runs forward-only timed mocks, and lets you try it before paying, and in 2026 that’s AMC Academic, a question bank built by IMGs who passed rather than a classroom. We’ve sat this exam, and we’ve watched hundreds of IMGs prepare for it with everything from a free app to a six-figure-rupee coaching package. Here’s how the five kinds of preparation compare, what each actually gives you, and how to decide without spending a resit’s worth of money finding out.

None of these has access to the exam. Every one works from the same public blueprint and the same Australian guidelines. The difference is how efficiently they get you through the material and whether they can tell you where you’re weak.

AMC question bank vs a general medical question bank

A medical question bank built for medical students, for internal medicine boards or for another country’s licensing exam is not an AMC question bank, however large it is. The AMC MCQ is scored against Australian graduates and its management questions follow eTG, the RACGP Red Book and the Australian Immunisation Handbook. A general medicine qbank teaches you the medicine you already know and the wrong management. An AMC MCQ qbank is scoped to the six-group blueprint, references Australian guidelines on every explanation, and runs AMC MCQ practice questions and trial exams in the forward-only, timed format the real CAT uses. That’s the whole difference, and it’s the difference between a medical quiz and exam preparation.

Why an AMC question bank does most of the work

The AMC CAT MCQ is 150 single-best-answer questions, adaptive, forward-only, with no negative marking, weighted to a published six-group blueprint. The skills it tests are pattern recognition on common presentations, Australian management, and deciding under time pressure. All three are trained by answering questions and reading why each option is right or wrong, then sitting timed mocks. Lectures are a slower way to get the same knowledge. Format and blueprint are in What is the AMC CAT MCQ exam? and AMC exam syllabus and topics.

Coaching classes vs self-study

Coaching gives you: a start date, a schedule, a cohort to keep pace with, a teacher to ask, and accountability. For someone studying alongside a house job with no study partner, those things are real and can be the difference between finishing a bank and abandoning it.

Coaching doesn’t give you: real questions, a shortcut, or a higher standard. Claims of “90% pass rate” are self-reported and count only the students who finished and sat. Some coaching centres, particularly in South Asia, sell recall banks as the core product; that’s a red flag, for reasons set out in AMC recalls and past papers.

Self-study works when: you have 20–25 hours a week, you can hold yourself to a schedule, and your bank reports results by patient group so the analytics do the job a teacher would. Most doctors in current practice pass this way.

A sensible middle path is a bank with an AI companion: the structure and the “someone to ask” without the classroom fee. The India-and Pakistan-specific view on coaching is in The

AMC exam for Indian and Pakistani doctors.

Tutors

A private tutor is worth it for one thing: a specific weak group after a failed attempt, when your content-area feedback tells you exactly where the problem is. Paying a tutor to walk you through all of medicine is the most expensive way to do what a bank does.

Apps

The AMC’s own MCQ Preparation App comes free with your authorisation and has a couple of hundred questions with feedback. It’s the only material from the examiner; use it for calibration. Beyond that, any bank that runs in a browser on a phone is an app for practical purposes. Sit mocks on a laptop, because that’s closer to the Pearson VUE screen.

The seven-point checklist

Run this on any course, bank or app before you pay.

  1. Blueprint scope. Does it cover the six groups in the exam’s proportions and nothing else?

  2. Explanation on every option. Not just the key.

  3. Forward-only, timed, 150-question mocks.

  4. Month-specific mocks. Can you sit a paper built around a recent sitting’s topics?

  5. Analytics by patient group. A single percentage tells you nothing.

  6. Australian guideline references in the explanations.

  7. A free trial, without a card.

If a course fails 1, 2 or 3, no amount of teaching quality makes up for it.

What “practice test reviews” should actually look at

When people search for AMC practice test reviews they’re usually asking whether a bank’s mocks feel like the real exam. Three things to check: can you go back (you shouldn’t be able to), is the score broken down by patient group, and does the difficulty feel calibrated across the paper rather than easy-then-impossible. Guidance on reading a mock score is in AMC mock exams.

Costs in perspective

A resit of AMC Part 1 is AUD 2,920 plus the months. A six-month question bank subscription is a little over USD 100. Classroom coaching is a resit or two. The cheapest preparation is the one you finish. The full fee picture is in AMC exam fees in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AMC exam prep course?

For the CAT MCQ, a blueprint-scoped question bank with explanations on every option and forward-only timed mocks. Courses and coaching sit on top of that, not instead of it.

Do I need coaching to pass the AMC exam?

No. Most doctors in clinical practice pass with self-study and a good bank. Coaching helps if you need external structure.

Are there free AMC prep resources?

The AMC’s MCQ Preparation App, the examination specifications, the RACGP Red Book, the Immunisation Handbook, and free questions and cases from question banks including ours.

How much does AMC coaching cost?

Roughly AUD 1,000 to 6,000 or more, or several lakh rupees, depending on the provider and format.

Is an AMC prep app enough on its own?

The AMC’s free app is a calibration tool, not a full preparation. A full bank that runs on your phone is a different thing.

What to do this week

  1. Run the seven-point checklist on whatever you’re considering.

  2. Sit the 20 free questions, timed, and get a patient-group breakdown.

  3. Be frank with yourself about whether you need structure or just a bank.

  4. Pick one and finish it.
