IELTS Academic Exam Preparation for Doctors: Your Band 7 Plan Alongside the AMC

IELTS Academic Exam Preparation for Doctors: Your Band 7 Plan Alongside the AMC

TL;DR: IELTS Academic exam preparation for doctors starts with the target: an overall band of 7, with at least 7 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and at least 6.5 in Writing, the minimum for registration in Australia. You don't need IELTS to sit AMC Part 1, but you'll need it to register, and your result must be under two years old when you apply. Start by finding your weakest band, put in 45 to 60 minutes a day for six to eight weeks alongside your AMC study, and book the test once your practice bands reach target. AMC Academic includes a full IELTS Academic course, with practice in all four skills, AI feedback with an estimated band, band tracking and a vocabulary list, in the same subscription as its AMC Part 1 question bank.

You've passed exams that decided whether you'd become a doctor. You've written handovers at 3 am, broken bad news to families and read guidelines in what may be your second or third language. So it can feel frustrating when a test that takes less than three hours stands between you and registration in Australia.

Here's the good news. IELTS Academic doesn't measure how good a doctor you are, or even how well you communicate on a ward round. It measures how well you handle a specific set of conventions under time pressure, and conventions can be learned. As our IELTS Academic tips for doctors put it, IELTS rewards a particular way of answering, and that's something you can practise.

This guide is the big picture of IELTS Academic exam preparation for doctors: the scores you need in 2026, where IELTS fits around AMC Part 1, an eight-week plan you can run next to your AMC study, and the habits that move a band. For technique section by section, with 16 free IELTS Academic sample questions and answers, keep our band 7 tips guide open in another tab.

What IELTS score do doctors need in Australia?

Doctors need IELTS Academic with an overall band of 7, at least 7 in Listening, Reading and Speaking, and at least 6.5 in Writing. Ahpra and the National Boards, including the Medical Board of Australia, set that minimum in the English language skills registration standard.

The Boards updated their minimum scores for tests taken from 23 April 2026, and the IELTS Academic targets stayed the same. Here's the full set for tests sat on or after that date, current as of October 2026, from Ahpra's list of accepted English language tests:

TestOverallListeningReadingWritingSpeaking
IELTS Academic7776.57
OETNot used350360350360
PTE Academic6358596076
TOEFL iBT9122222324

Four rules matter as much as the numbers:

  • Two sittings can count. You can combine up to two sittings of the same test taken no more than 12 months apart. For IELTS, you need at least 7 overall in each sitting, the section minimums across the two, and nothing below 6.5 in any section of either sitting.

  • The One Skill Retake is accepted. If one section lets you down, you can resit just that section within 60 days. It doesn't count as an extra sitting, but every result you rely on must fall within 12 months.

  • Test centre only. Sit IELTS Academic on paper or on computer at a test centre. At-home versions of any test, IELTS Online included, aren't accepted.

  • Results expire. They must be less than two years old on the day you lodge your registration application, apart from narrow exceptions for continuous work or study.

For how your result fits into registration, see our guide to IELTS for Ahpra registration.

Do you need IELTS for the AMC exam?

No. There are no AMC exam English requirements to meet before you sit Part 1. English proficiency is a registration requirement set by the Medical Board of Australia, and the AMC says plainly that it's the Board's requirement, not the AMC's. So there's no AMC IELTS requirement, and no IELTS score for the AMC exam itself.

That doesn't make IELTS something to think about later. The AMC advises applicants to arrange proof of English before applying under any of its assessment pathways, and every job you apply for in Australia depends on registration. Leave IELTS preparation until after Part 1, and you'll be preparing for an English test at exactly the moment you want to be applying for jobs.

So the useful question isn't whether you need IELTS. It's when to sit it.

When to sit IELTS Academic around AMC Part 1

Two rules set your window. Start early enough that English never holds up registration, and sit late enough that your result is still under two years old when you lodge your application. Here's how that plays out:

Where you areWhen to sit IELTS Academic
Starting AMC Part 1 preparation, and your first practice bands are close to target in every skillPrepare alongside your AMC study, then sit IELTS soon after your AMC exam, while you wait for results
Your first practice bands are a band or more short in any skill, often WritingStart IELTS preparation now, in parallel with the AMC. A full band takes longer than a few weeks to close
You've already passed AMC Part 1Book IELTS now. It's the step between you and registration
You sat IELTS more than 18 months agoCheck the date. If the result will be over two years old when you lodge your registration application, plan a new sitting

AMC Part 1 results arrive three weeks after your exam. Our guide to life after AMC Part 1 calls that wait the ideal window, and it's easy to see why: you're in exam shape, your diary is clear, and your result will still be fresh when you apply for registration and jobs. Book ahead so your test date lands inside it.

Band 7 is a skill, not a verdict

Doctors who pass IELTS Academic tend to do it the same way: they learn what the test rewards and practise exactly that. Three ideas make the difference.

The test rewards conventions you can learn. In Listening, a misspelt answer scores zero. In Reading, FALSE and NOT GIVEN mean different things. Writing Task 1 wants an overview of the data, and Speaking wants answers you develop with a reason and an example. None of that is about how good your English is. All of it is teachable, and our IELTS tips for doctors show you how.

Your weakest band is just information. For many IMGs it's Writing, the one section where 6.5 is enough. Your first estimated band in each skill tells you where the marks are, the same way a blood result tells you where to look. Treat it like that, and the first score stops being frightening and starts being useful.

Daily practice beats weekend marathons. Forty-five minutes a day, six days a week, for eight weeks adds up to more than 35 hours of focused practice, and it fits around a full AMC study load. You already know this from medical school: spaced repetition beats cramming.

You've built these habits before, for harder exams. IELTS just asks you to point them at a new target.

Why doctors find IELTS Academic harder than expected

Clinical work trains some habits that cost marks in IELTS. Knowing them in advance takes the sting out.

Listening. About 30 minutes, four parts, each recording played once. Speakers correct themselves on purpose ("the fourteenth... sorry, the sixteenth"), so the first answer you hear is often wrong. Spelling counts, and going over the word limit scores zero.

Reading. 60 minutes, three passages, 40 questions, with no extra time to transfer answers. Here, medical knowledge is a liability. If the passage doesn't say it, the answer is NOT GIVEN, however true you know it to be. Practise telling FALSE from NOT GIVEN until it's automatic.

Writing. 60 minutes, two tasks: Task 1, at least 150 words on a graph, table, chart, process or map, and Task 2, an essay of at least 250 words that carries twice the weight. Clinical writing is compressed, abbreviated and impersonal; Task 2 wants a clear position argued in full sentences and everyday words. "Hypertension" is fine. "HbA1c" isn't. Spend five minutes planning Task 2 before you write a word.

Speaking. 11 to 14 minutes in three parts, with an examiner. Doctors are trained to keep answers short and precise, and that costs marks for fluency. Answer, give a reason, then add an example. Your accent isn't assessed; how well you develop an idea is. In Part 2, use the minute of preparation to jot down four or five keywords.

Our IELTS Academic tips for doctors take each of these traps in turn, with four practice questions and answers for every skill.

An 8-week IELTS Academic exam preparation plan for doctors

You don't need a shelf of study material for IELTS Academic. You need a plan, a timer and honest feedback. This plan assumes 45 to 60 minutes a day, six days a week, running next to your AMC study. If your first practice bands are a band or more short anywhere, stretch weeks 2 to 6 before you book.

WeekFocusWhat to do
1DiagnoseDo a timed practice set in each of the four skills and get an estimated band for each. Compare them with 7, 7, 6.5 and 7, then read the band descriptors for your weakest skill
2–3Your weakest skillDaily drills in that skill only. For Writing, a Task 2 essay every second day with five minutes of planning and a word count, and Task 1 overviews in between
4Re-testRepeat the timed practice set in all four skills. Compare each band with week 1 and choose your next focus
5–6The next weakest skillDrill it daily, and keep one short session a week for each of the others so nothing slips
7Test conditionsPractise all four skills back to back, timed, at the time of day you'll sit the real test. Record three Speaking Part 2 answers and listen back
8TaperLight practice only. Confirm your test centre, ID and timings, and protect your sleep

Book the real test once your practice bands sit at or above target in every skill. For a free warm-up, our IELTS Academic tips for doctors include 16 practice questions, four for each skill, with answers.

Every step above runs inside AMC Academic: practice in all four skills, AI feedback that estimates your band, band tracking to show the trend, Writing and Speaking scored against the band descriptors, and a vocabulary list to learn from.

Studying for the AMC and IELTS at the same time

Two exams at once sounds like twice the load, but IELTS Academic prep fits around AMC study better than most doctors expect. Both reward the same habits: timed practice, careful reading and reasoning you can explain. A day that covers both can look like this:

WhenExamWhat
Morning, your sharpest hoursAMC Part 1Your timed question block and its review
Lunch or commuteIELTSOne Reading passage in 20 minutes, or one Listening part
EveningIELTSA Writing task three times a week, or ten minutes of recorded Speaking
WeekendBothA full AMC mock one week, a timed IELTS practice set in all four skills the next

Three ways to make one exam train the other:

  • Turn an AMC case into Speaking practice. Work through a free case such as bronchiolitis in a 6-month-old, then explain the answer aloud for two minutes as you would to a worried parent, with no jargon. Record it and listen back. That's Part 2 timing, and it builds the plain, precise paraphrase the Speaking band descriptors reward.

  • Read AMC vignettes the way you read IELTS passages. AMC stems bury the deciding detail in a long paragraph, and IELTS Reading hides its answers behind paraphrase. Both reward reading for the one detail the question turns on, and any of our 50 free AMC clinical cases will train it.

  • Mine population health for Task 2 ideas. Health is a common Task 2 theme, like the prevention-versus-treatment prompt in our tips post. A case such as breast cancer screening with a family history gives you a concrete example to argue with, in everyday words.

The Speaking work pays twice, too. Developed answers, plain language and staying calm under questioning are exactly what RMO interview questions test once you're applying for jobs.

IELTS Academic preparation inside AMC Academic

Preparing for both exams usually means two subscriptions. With AMC Academic, it's one. Our IELTS Academic preparation course is included in every plan:

  • Practice for all four skills in the real exam format: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

  • AI-powered feedback with an estimated band, so you know where you stand long before test day.

IELTS Academic exam preparation: frequently asked questions

What IELTS score do doctors need in Australia?

An overall band of 7, with at least 7 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and at least 6.5 in Writing. That's the minimum for registration with the Medical Board of Australia through Ahpra, and it's unchanged for tests taken from 23 April 2026.

Do I need IELTS for the AMC exam?

Not to sit it. English proficiency is a Medical Board of Australia requirement for registration, not an AMC requirement. The AMC does advise arranging your proof of English before you apply under its assessment pathways, and you'll need it before you can be registered.

Can I combine two IELTS results?

Yes, from up to two sittings taken no more than 12 months apart. You need at least 7 overall in each sitting, the section minimums across the two, and no score below 6.5 in any section of either sitting.

Does Ahpra accept the IELTS One Skill Retake?

Yes. You can retake one section within 60 days of your test. It isn't counted as an extra sitting, but all the results you rely on must fall within 12 months.

Is IELTS Online accepted for registration?

No. At-home versions of the accepted tests aren't accepted. Sit IELTS Academic on paper or on computer at a test centre.

Are OET, PTE or TOEFL accepted instead of IELTS?

Yes. OET, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are also accepted, each with its own minimum scores, which are in the table above. Results from different tests can't be combined.

How long does IELTS Academic preparation take for a doctor?

It depends on the gap between your first practice bands and the targets. If you're close in every section, six to eight weeks at 45 to 60 minutes a day is a realistic plan. If you're a band or more short anywhere, start earlier and give that section most of your time.

Where can I find a free IELTS Academic practice test?

Start with the 16 free practice questions in our IELTS Academic tips for doctors, four for each skill, with answers. When you want more, every AMC Academic plan includes practice in all four skills, AI feedback with an estimated band and band tracking, alongside the AMC Part 1 question bank.

Is IELTS Academic included in AMC Academic?

Yes. Every plan includes the full IELTS Academic course: practice in all four skills, Writing and Speaking scored against the band descriptors, AI feedback with an estimated band, band tracking and a vocabulary list, alongside the AMC Part 1 question bank.
