AMC Part 2 is the AMC Clinical Examination, the second stage of the AMC exam: a 16-station clinical assessment you can sit only after passing AMC Part 1, the AMC MCQ. You pass by passing 9 of the 14 scored stations. It costs AUD 3,000 in person at the AMC's National Test Centre in Melbourne or AUD 3,400 online, and 21 percent of candidates passed in 2022–23. No 2027 dates have been published yet; the next release of places, for 2027, is expected in November 2026. The MCQ stage of the AMC exam comes first, and we designed AMC Academic, the question bank built most tightly to the AMC blueprint, to get you through it.
At a glance
AMC Part 2 is what candidates call the AMC Clinical Examination, the second stage of the AMC exam. The first stage, AMC Part 1, is the AMC CAT MCQ.
You must pass the AMC MCQ before you can sit AMC Part 2.
The exam runs 20 stations: 16 assessed and 4 rest. Each assessed station lasts 10 minutes, 2 to read and 8 with the patient.
Fourteen stations are scored, and you need 9 passes. The threshold was 10 until the AMC lowered it.
Fees: AUD 3,000 in person in Melbourne, AUD 3,400 online.
2027 dates are not out yet. In-person places are released in batches, and the next release is expected in November 2026.
Doctors working under limited registration at an accredited site can take workplace-based assessment (WBA) instead.
The road to AMC Part 2 runs through the AMC exam's MCQ stage. The 2,800+ blueprint-mapped questions in our AMC Academic question bank are built for it, and our 50 free clinical cases double as consultation practice.
How AMC Part 2 differs from AMC Part 1
| AMC Part 1 | AMC Part 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Official name | AMC CAT MCQ examination | AMC Clinical Examination |
| What it tests | Knowledge and clinical decisions | History, examination, diagnosis and management with a simulated patient |
| Format | 150 questions in 3.5 hours, computer adaptive | 16 assessed stations of 8 minutes, each after 2 minutes' reading |
| Where | Pearson VUE test centres in Australia and overseas | National Test Centre, Melbourne; limited online sittings |
| Fee | AUD 2,920 | AUD 3,000 in person; AUD 3,400 online |
| Pass standard | Scaled score of 250 out of 500 | 9 of 14 scored stations |
| Pass rate, 2022–23 | 47% | 21% |
| Results | 4:00 pm on the Friday three weeks after the exam week | 4:00 pm on the Friday three weeks after the sitting |
Both stages lead to the same document: a pass in each stage of the AMC exam earns the AMC Certificate. The AMC exam overview shows how the two parts fit together.
What happens in an AMC Part 2 station?
Each station sets one main task: taking a history, examining, reaching a diagnosis, or managing, counselling or educating a patient. You read the brief for 2 minutes, then spend 8 minutes with a simulated patient while an examiner watches and scores. Stations cover adult medicine and surgery, women's health, paediatrics and mental health, in hospital and community settings.
Every station is marked pass or fail, using the station's key steps, the assessment domains and a global rating. Two of the 16 assessed stations are pilots that do not normally count, which leaves 14 scored, and you need 9 of them. The AMC Clinical exam guide covers the format in full, along with the AMC Handbook of Clinical Assessment and the technology rules for online sittings.
AMC Part 2 exam dates 2027
The AMC has not yet published 2027 dates for AMC Part 2. Unlike the MCQ stage of the AMC exam, which runs as monthly events booked through Pearson VUE, the Clinical exam releases in-person places in batches for a block of future dates, and a place is final once it is allocated. The release for September to December 2026 is complete and its waitlist is full. The AMC's next batch, for 2027, is expected in November 2026.
Online sittings are separate and limited. The most recent were on 10 and 11 November 2026, with applications closing on 28 September 2026, and they were restricted to doctors working in Modified Monash Model (MMM) 2 to 7 areas: regional, rural and remote Australia.
Places go quickly when a release opens. Subscribe to the AMC's assessment news, have your documents ready beforehand and apply on the day it opens. The MCQ stage works differently: every event for the year is already listed, with its scheduling deadline, in AMC exam dates 2027.
How much does AMC Part 2 cost?
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Clinical exam, in person (Melbourne) | AUD 3,000 |
| Clinical exam, online | AUD 3,400 (AUD 3,000 plus a AUD 400 levy) |
| Appeal | AUD 910 for one station, plus AUD 235 for each additional station |
| Workplace-based assessment, the alternative | AUD 1,070 to the AMC, plus the provider's fee |
The AMC cut both Clinical fees in July 2025, from AUD 3,991 and AUD 4,391. Withdraw in the first month after paying and half the fee comes back. After that nothing is refunded, and a no-show or a same-day withdrawal gets nothing. Travel to Melbourne and accommodation come on top. Charges for both stages are set out side by side in AMC exam fees.
Why is the AMC Part 2 pass rate so low?
In 2022–23, 21 percent of AMC Clinical candidates passed, against 47 percent of MCQ attempts. Every one of those Clinical candidates had already passed the MCQ, so the gap is not a knowledge gap. AMC Part 2 scores what you do in eight minutes with a patient: how you structure the consultation, how you examine, how you explain, and whether your reasoning holds together, all judged live. More reading does little for it, in the same way that studying the road rules does little for a driving test. Rehearsal does: timed stations, out loud, with someone scoring you.
The AMC has since lowered the threshold from 10 stations to 9, which should lift the rate, though no annual figure has been published since the change. The AMC exam pass rates guide tracks both stages.
AMC Part 2 or workplace-based assessment?
Workplace-based assessment (WBA) replaces AMC Part 2 for doctors who have passed the MCQ stage of the AMC exam and work under limited registration at an AMC-accredited site. Instead of one day of stations, you are assessed in your job over six to twelve months, through observed encounters, case-based discussions and multisource feedback. The AMC charges AUD 1,070, the provider adds its own fee, and a place depends on where you are employed.
The Clinical exam is the route for everyone else, including candidates still overseas: AMC Part 2 cannot be sat outside Australia, and online places have been limited to doctors working in regional, rural and remote Australia. WBA vs the Clinical exam compares the two routes in detail, and jobs after AMC Part 1 covers finding a position under limited registration.
What comes after AMC Part 2?
A pass in AMC Part 2 completes the AMC exam and, with your MCQ pass, earns the AMC Certificate. The certificate is not a licence to practise. You present it to the Medical Board of Australia, through Ahpra, for provisional registration, complete 12 months of supervised practice (47 weeks full-time equivalent) and then apply for general registration. The IMG pathways guide sets out the Standard pathway step by step, and AHPRA vs AMC explains who does what.
Reach AMC Part 2 sooner with AMC Academic
Most people reading about AMC Part 2 are still working on AMC Part 1, and the MCQ is the gate. The quickest route to the Clinical exam is a first-time pass at the MCQ, and that is the job we designed AMC Academic for. We came through the AMC exam ourselves as IMGs, and we built AMC Academic to be the question bank most tightly aligned with the AMC blueprint and a study resource you can trust.
Blueprint first. More than 2,800 questions in our question bank, each mapped to the AMC blueprint, with the six patient groups weighted as the exam weights them.
Faithful to the exam. Short stems, one decision and five options, very similar to the way the AMC asks its own, and we explain all five options against Australian guidelines.
Exam conditions in every mock. Our mocks are timed and forward-only, including month-specific mocks, with results broken down by specialty and topic.
A study companion that reads your results. Astra, our AI assistant, tells you which specialty to revise next.
We carry the same approach into AMC Part 2. Our 50 free clinical cases double as consultation practice: read the stem, take the history and talk through the management aloud before you open the answer. We are also building AI-run OSCE stations that time you and score you the way an examiner would; our AI OSCE practice guide explains how they will work.
